Now Hear This
Who needs stenographers? The Olympus DS-330 digital
voice recorder comes with a docking station that plugs
right into a computer. You can take oral notes with
the DS-330 and dump your thoughts directly onto a PC
of Mac (where any voice-recognition program can transcribe
them). Leaves more time for important things like lunch.

Knife
Life
Was there anything
swanker than the foldout scissors on your
Swiss Army knife? O.K., maybe the toothpick.
But even that pales in comparison with the
newest feature on Swiss Armys stylish
Voyager knife: a digital alarm clock. Think
of the possibilities. Now, besides uncorking
bottles, screwing screws, picking teeth and
opening cans of smoked sprats, you can be
awakened before reveille. |

Disc
Throwing
So did you finally go out and buy a DVD player?
Well, now a consortium of electronics makers is
working one a new, incompatible DVD standard. The
platform will play only so-called Blu-ray discs,
which are encoded using short-wavelength blue violet
lasers to burn extra-narrow tracks of data. The
new discs will hold about 27 gigabytes, about five
times standard capacity, or enough room for
13 hr of TV shows. Look for new Blu-ray players
in late 2003, if you have any room left on your
component shelf. |

Sonys latest tilt at the digital music
market is the MZ.N1 MiniDisc. The player is compact,
stylish and lets you burn 5 hr of MP3 tunes onto
a standard MD. Bundled with jukebox software and
a USB connection, setup is easy. But at $330 the
MZ-N1 is pricey when compared with simpler, no-disc-drive
MP3 players, which are starting to overcome memory
limitations. Sonys got a fine idea, but
it would have been better in 1999.
