Wet and Wired

The ReefMaster Digital Land and Sea Camera is the first digital camera that works underwater. Its built-in software compensates for tricky undersea lighting conditions and its high-tech plastic housing is waterproof to 30m (a deluxe model can go to 60m). With a price tag of $450, though, you’d better hope you’re snapping sunken treasure. Find out more at www.sealife-cameras.com

Fast Phones

Last month Verizon became the first US company to deploy the fancy, fast new form of wireless internet access known to techies as “3G”, for “third generation”. The $30-a-month service (Verizon calls it the Express Network) will send date to PCs with special wireless cards, and even to some call phones, more than twice as fast as an ordinary56k modem.
Palm Treat

The new Palm 705 is a step closer to the easy, flexible wireless e-mail access all handheld users crave. Unlike the Palm VII, the i705 checks your e-mail constantly instead of just when you ask, and it alerts you when it arrives. If the i70r had a mini-keyboard like its rival, the RM Black Berry, we’d give it a high five.

Twist And Shout

People who like the extras on Sony’s CLIE hand-helds (and plenty do) are going to love the latest model. The CLIE PEG-NR70 has a colour screen that flips up to reveal a keyboard and twists back down so you can cradle it like a regular PDA. There’s more: a built-in remote that will operate TVs, stereos and DVD players; an improved MP3 player with better speakers; and integrated digital camera. Will next year’s model brew coffee?

Over And Out
Walkie-talkies get smarter every year. Audiovox’s new GMRS two-way radios not only offer twice the range (as far as 8km) but also come with a build-in global positioning system. Take a pair on a camping trip, and you’ll be able to track your buddies and wayward children. Punch in the coordinates, and the GPS satellites can guide you back to base camp-or the nearest McDonald’s.

She walked off the set of Deep Rising (or was “let go,” depending upon the source) after disagreeing with the director – a seeming foolhardy stand for anything but a big-name actor. Yet Claire Forlani went on to such blockbusters as Meet Joe Black and Mystery Men (while Deep Rising sunk), and now has a reputation for artistic integrity that hasn’t hurt a bit.more...
