Profitability
is the Key
Some people have beer-bottle openers as key-chain ornaments.
Thin different: IBM is now offering an 8 MB memory chip
that’s encased in plastic, USB-compatible and key- chain
ready. It’s $49 and available only at ibm.com (type
“usb memory key” in the search box to find it). The
gadget is incredibly easy to use. Plug the device into
an open USB port and it automatically shows up as an
external drive. Then, simply drag and droop documents,
photos or spreadsheets. Your Windows PC copies the files
to the memory key. Unplug, stuff the gadget into your
pocket and off you go.

The
Mini-Me of MP3
How small can an MP3 player get? At the moment,
about the size of a Zippo lighter, but at
a fraction of the weight. The Jumper II from
CMC comes with 32MB of built-in flash memory,
a USB cable for downloading tunes from your
PC, headphones and a multimedia card slot
that expands its capacity to up to 128MB (enough
memory for about four hours of music). The
sound is suprisingly good for the price: $99.
It’s available only on the Web at mp3shopping.com;
follow the directions carefully, so far there’s
no tech support available. |

Thumbs
Away!
With the use of short message service (SMS) on
the rise in Asia, Motorola has come up with a
way around the awkward thumb-input method. It
has created the first full-sized keyboard for
mobile phone. The $100 lboard works with Motorola’
i85 and i50sx phones as well as future models.

Transforming
Camera
Speaking of multipurpose machine overloaded shutterbugs
get some relief with Matsushita’s new NV-EX21. It’s
a digital camcorder with a detachable 1.08-megapixel
still camera. Digital video cameras have included
still camera functions for a while, but the combo
is usually bulkier than a standard digital camera.
With the NV-EX21 you can leave the cassette deck
at home if you don’t want to take video. The pricey
product debuts in Japan on September. 1 for about
$1,700. |

You
can take it with you
While the sun may some day
set on the PC, this tablet-like device is touted
as a rising star. Roughly the size of an A4 sheet
of paper and about a thumb-width thick, the web-pad
could become the control panel for the home network.
And it works as a wireless Internet and e-mail
terminal. Configurations vary from brand to brand,
but the basics are the same. BNtech offers a touch-sensitive
LCD screen with a pop-up virtual keyboard. Inside
is a hard disk for saving files and programs.
With a minimum adopters will be deterred..
